PRINCESS ROYAL HOSPITAL – BREAKTHROUGH BREAST CANCER SERVICE PLEDGE

On a chilly evening last month, Cllrs. John Smart, Ron Plenderleith and I were privileged to attend the launch of the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Service Pledge at the Princess Royal Hospital. We were told that our Hospital Trust had joined 45 others nationally to work together towards better breast cancer services.

Many of us already know that the level of care at the Princess Royal in this field is second to none and it must be cause for celebration that we have such an outstanding department in our Parish. Patients arrive for their consultation and are diagnosed at the same time. We heard from Debbie Vogel, director of strategy for the Trust, how essential the ’one-stop’ clinic is in terms of efficiency, convenience and the minimising of anxiety as patients are not kept waiting for their diagnosis. She said that the ‘one-stop’ clinic is right for our hospital and it will remain. Each new patient will now be given a copy of the Service Pledge setting out the standards of care they can expect. It is reassuring to know that patients were consulted, and will continue to be consulted, about ways to do things better.

On a personal note, I experienced diagnosis and treatment at P.R.H. nearly 15 years ago and I would urge everyone who might find themselves in a similar situation, however worried they might be, to approach it with the confidence born of knowing that they are in the best possible hands.

Under the slogan “We Stand for Hope” L to R:

Dr. Coventry, Dr. Barrowclough, Debbie Vogle, Mandy Wilson (Advanced Nurse Practitioner), Ruairi O’Connor (Breakthrough), Sue Lewis (Clinical Nurse Practitioner), Mr. Hinton (Consultant Breast Surgeon), Pat Jones (Clinical Nurse Practitioner),  Sarah Rascall (oncoplastic surgeon), Jenny Ellis (Breast Care Nurse).

By Pat Smart, January 2012.
